8 - Sunday, January 5, 1992 — North Shore News MAILBOX Stranger in a strange land Dear Editor: After 15 years of living abroad I have returned to Canada in a tather destitute condition. Deter- mined to get back on my feet again, I put an ad in the North Shore News asking if someone could donate any of their un- wanted furniture to help me. The first calier opened her con- versation bluntly and sarcastically, “Well, isn't that a smart way to furnish your apartment? ’’ and abruptly hung up. The second caller asked nicely if I was the gentleman who had just arrived in Canada. When I an- swered to the affirmative, she told me, ‘Why don’t you drop dead?,’’ and hung up. The third caller also asked in a nice voice if I was the geatleman who had just arrived in Canada. _ When I said that I was, she spit Ba EF a LOPLI GS sane a as North & West Yancouver School Districts RE-ENTRY DIPLOMA PROGRAMS RECEPTIONIST TRAINING (DPTO) Designed to equip you to cope in the reception area of today’s busy office. Where are the Canadians whe took pies, cakes and sand- wiches to a new neighbor on their hectic moving-in day? I myself have bought new clothing and shoes for poor children; brought a foreign visitor to my home for dinner and given him clothing to send to his family in their country; and have given to many needy causes. Have I been away so long? While travelling in other poor countries, I was treated royally to the best the destitute populace had to offer. If a dear old lady had only two oranges in her larder, and gave me one, what more could one ask? if a poor, dirty, barefoot, smiley-faced boy, in his one and only pair of dirty shorts, ran after me to give me a lobster he had caught (knowing that ‘‘gr- ingos’’ love lobster), he was giving me all he had. I spent a few dismal days wondering if I had really done something wrong in this ‘‘foreign country.”” Suddenly the sun shone, and a host of North Shore residents opened their generous hearts and | could have furnished my apart- ment three times. As a matter of fact, I, in return, gave some of my gifts to a young Greek couple who have just moved here. 1 wish to thank al! those very nice folks that extended their hands to help me up a few rungs of a shaky ladder.
