Deaz Editor: ft is distressing to encounter the uninformed campaign currently under way on the North Shore against logging in the Capilano and Seymour watersheds. There has been a. significani Dying to know MAILBOX Reader says ‘yes’ to watershed logging amount of good research over the past 20 years, which, if people would take the time and effort to study it, would ease most concerns about logging. Ik clearly shows that water quality is not impacted. On the contrary, logging and the improved access provide significant berefits. These include such things as fire control and improved forest health. If one reviews the O'Loughlin study of the Capilano and Seymour watersheds, it shows that although logged areas had righer sediment production than unicgg- ed forest in one watershed, the reverse was true in the other wa- tershea studied. Use of percent- ages is also misleading — the O'Loughlin data show that the difference in erosion caused by logging on the first watershed equates to a layer less than one mm thick of soil material. Most residents of the North Shore are unaware of the carefully designed management plan that is being followed in their water- sheds. # believe tha: your newspa- per could provide a valuable ser- vice to its readers by publishing an article dealing with the facts of this matter. J.E. Barker North Vancouver definition Dear Editor: Atthough it is a ‘‘deadly” serious subject { did enioy your Oct. 28 article on the Lions Gate Hospita! morgue and Jim Baigent’s job. I wonder, however, where your reporter dug up the ‘‘diener’ word? It isn’t in my home dic- tionaries nor in the unabridged versions at the loca! public library. No doubt other readers are dy- ing to learn more about the derivation and usage history of this intriguing word. Please tell. G.C. Hamilton North Vancouver Editor’s Note: The job title ‘‘diener’’ used by Morgue attendants has aroused inquiries from more than one armchair linguist. According to Jim Baigent, the diener at Lions Gate Hospital, diener is a German term meaning “‘servant,’’ typically used in Germany to denote lab workers. B.C. has adopted the word to refer to the morgue at- tendant as distinct’ from other workers. A GIFT THAT LASTS! >. Silk Plants . 84 N.Van.
