Be careful with color — Colored
lights usually appear garish and
can create a circus atmosphere in
your landscape.

Play with silhouettes and
shadows —~ Silhouette leaf patterns
against a fence or a wall; highlight
foregrounds against a shadowed
backdrop.

They don’t run on batteries —
Do not get carried away trying to
light every corner of the garden.
You will have to run wires to all of
your lights and that might prove
difficult or expensive when cross-
ing obstructions like driveways or
illuminating the back forty.

The availability and variety of
outdoor lighting products has
soared in the last five years or so.
There is now a wide selection of
inexpensive kits to choose from
that will allow you to achieve most
of your lighting requirements.

These generally consist of a

low-voltage transformer, a limited
amount of wire, four or more
lights and a timer. Prices for the
above configuration will be some-
where around $100.

And they do limit you to the
low-wattage systems, and the styles
are pretty standard.

There are higher quality, metal
fixtures, which will give you better
overall performance and _ last
longer, as well as provide you with
a wider variety of more attractive
styles.

This custom equipment is more
expensive and requires slightly
more sophisticated wiring, but for
those wanting quality, they are the
only way to go.

As an example of pricing, the
fixtures can run between $200 and
$600 and a complete system, simi-
lar to that found in a kit, would be
in the $800 to $1,200 price range.

Whatever route you choose, [
know you will be less depressed
with the grey days ahead if you (I
have to say it) light up your life.
