Is there a hospi- tal just a stone’s crow away from your cottage? Chances are most people would answer‘'no''to all three of these questions. Nevertheless, every year thou- sands of British Columbians head for the lake or the woods, un- prepared for the hazards of the wilderness. Isn't it better to be ready to handle the unexpected? In many B.C. cities and towns, a call to 911 will bring emergency help in minutes, In rural areas, help is also available at the other end of a phone line. But at the campsite or cottage or deep in the woods, medical aid may be a long way off and reaching a telephone quickly may seem an impossibility. Before you get away from it all this summer, St. John Ambulance advises you to be prepared. If you plan ahead your wilderness adven- ture can be safe, exciting and fun. If you don’t plan, “roughing it’’ can be a nightmare. It pays to be ready now so you'll be sorry-free later. A well-equipped first aid kit is essential to the camper or cottager. It will allow you to treat minor in- juries quickly and help to keep major injuries under control until you get to a medical facility. Even if you never have to use a first aid kit on your trip, you'll have the peace of mind of knowing that it’s there. If your summer holiday takes you away from public campsites or hiking areas or if your destination is even relatively remote, you should also develop a survival plan and carry a survival kit. According to St. John Am- bulance, your survival kit should include: © waterproof matches - to build a fire and provide light, heat and comfort; ® flint, steel and some tinder - in case the matches get used up; * cord - to make a shelter, for example; ¢ unbreakable mirror - to signal; © whistle - to attract attention; © beef cubes and raisins, for ex- ample - to provide quick, nutritious food energy; ® fish hooks, line and snare wire ESP fair held THE ANNUAL Fall Psychic Holistic ESP Fair is presenting psychics from across North America at the Pacific National Exhibition Forum Sept. 16 to 18.
