In a September 18 meeting of the North Vancouver Teachers Association (NVTA), District 44 teachers made a motion expressing their support for teachers and school districts ‘who have undertaken instruction only campaigns in order to regain full payments of sala- ty increments.” In a parallel motion, the NVTA agreed that they will not participate in extra cur- ticular activities ‘‘with or in By TIMOTHY RENSHAW those districts carrying out instruction only cam- paigns.”* in explaining reasons behind the motions, NVTA president Andy Krawczyk said that teachers’ salary in- crements were a fundamen- tal proponent of teachers salaries: ‘‘They are not something that teachers ask- ed for in the first place, sal- B.C.’s Compensation ary increments were imposed on teachers by the gov- ernment in lieu of full salaries. They are not infla- tion izereases but recogni- lion of increases in teacher experience.” NOT ELIGIBLE Increments are paid to junior teachers for each year of teaching experience, on what Krawczyk says is a 12- step grid in North Van- couver. As of 1984, approx- imately 67 per cent of North Vancouver teachers had teached the top of that grid and therefore are not eligible for further increments. Stabilization Commis- sioner Ed Peck has approved a three-year con- tract for West Vancouver’s employees.
