A2 - Sunday, March 7, 1982 - North Shore News have. The first imvolved my brother, Don. It was back in the early 1960s. An urgent family matter had caused me to fly from Winnipeg to Vancouver, not knowing exactly when I'd return. It might be a few days. It might be a couple of weeks. As things worked out, | ended up staying in Van- couver six days, then caught a plane that would get me back into Winnipeg at the unfortunate hour of 3 a.m. I'd meant to call home, to Jet them knotow I was on my way, but thought, no, it’s too awful an hour. [ll catch a cab. As I staggered out of the plane, 1 saw someone across the tarmac waving. In the darkness, it took me a minute to reahze the person was brother Don. I was astonished, the least. “How'd you know I was going to be artiving?” | lo say strictly personal by Bob Hunter Why not call it magic? I WOULD have to say, yes, I do believe in ex- trasensory perception. I've had a couple of ex- periences along those lines. I'm sure most of us asked. My brother seemed a bit embarrassed. He'd always been a practical guy. not given to weird behaviour. He said: “Well, to tell you the truth, I didn't. IT just woke up and knew you were on your way. So! phoned up the airport and asked if there was a jet on its way from Vancouver. There was. So | came down to meet it.” At least once a year, we sul mention the incident to each other, it was so eene. Td been sitting on that plane, wanting nothing more than for my brother to meet me and drive me home, and somehow he'd got the message. Okay. That was strange. But in some ways, this second such experience was an even longer shot. It happened several years later. By then, I was living in Vancouver. One day I gota termfic urge to go visit an old chum of mine in London, England. Since I'd last) been in contact with him, he'd moved to the very outskirts of London. I only knew that it was somewhere to the north. But the urge to visit him was so strong I decided to take a chance. I booked a flight. Then, the day before | left, a postcard arrived from my old friend — in Greece, where he was on holiday. For some reason, I| remained convinced, however, that I would find him in London. So I got on the plane and zipped over to London, had a few pints, then hopped on a Tube and headed north, suddenly remembering just how immense London really is. All ] had was the vaguest notion of where he might be. Following a_ series” of hunches — all the while growing more concerned that my $600 investment in a plane ucket might have been wasted — I crawled out of the Underground labryinth and got on a green double- decker bus that seemed lke the mghtone. In tact, ] had chmbed on the wrong bus and was heading mernly off to the Midlands of England, not passing within a dozen miles of my fmend’s house, when I looked out the window and there, at the service station, was my fmend — standing there, putting petrol into his Landrover. Feeing not all that sur- prised, | asked the dnver to let me off. walked back to the service station, and called to my fmend “Hh. Walt!” He just about passed oul It was good fun, but it was also more than aie tnfle astonishing. For not only had I been on the wrong bus, but he had just got back from Greece and was well off his usual beaten trail. He'd never been to this particular service station in his life. Our chances of con- necting the way we did were less than a bilhon to one. I'm sure, especially considering he had no idea 1 was on my way. 1 dont think there is anything truly” mysternous about three kinds of coin- cidences. It’s just that our tradioonal thinking doesn't allow much leeway when it comes to the extraordinary. Soll, I get a_ tingle. thinking about it. After all, the label you put on such an experience doesn't par- ticularly matter. Why cail it extrasensory perception anyway?
