Tie knocks WV Bantams out of Calgary

The West Vancouver
Bantam A's, guided by
coach Don Jamieson and
manager Ralph _ Erickson
came within a single point of
gaining a berth in the finals
of the prestigious Bantam A
International Tournament
which concluded on the
weekend in Calgary.

But of the twenty four
Major Division teams en-
tered, including squads from
Buffalo, Detroit, Seattle and
San Francisco, West Van
finished among the top eight
teams, as well as placing four
players on the tournament
All-Star roster.

Very early in the tour-
nament West Van_ served
notice they were to be taken
seriously, turning in stunning
performances over teams
from Swift) Current and
Edmonton - both Provincial
finalists who were expected
to be contenders for top
honours in the Calgary
event.

In their opening games,

Rick Hansen (25) and
Lenny Marriott (29) of
British Columbia will be
racing against athletes from
all over the world April 18 in
this year’s running of the
Boston Marathon.

Hansen who set a new
world record of 1:58:29 in

the “World Wheelchair
Championshps” at the
Orange Bowl Marathon

(Florida) in January is ex-
pected to better his unof-
ficial time of last year of
1:48:22.

Rick's fnend and training-
mate Lenny Marnott who
has improved tremendously
in the last six months and
placed 4th overall in Miam:
(2:08:03) hopes to cross the
fimsh line nght on Hansen's
heels.

volicyball, pole vaulting,

softball and baseball

young age of 15. Determined
to overcome this disability.

athlete and a physical
education teacher

forced to settle for a 3-3 tie
with Edmonton, as a result
of a disputed goal gloved in
by an Edmonton forward.

The tie with Edmonton
denied West Van the crucial
point in the standings
needed to place them in the
championship round.

West Van's only losses

were at the hands of the two
Alberta teams, losing out 5-3
to the Calgary Sabres and 6-5
to the Lethbridge Mohawks.
