BI4 - Wednesday, April 13, 1983 - North Shore News Vancouver Whitecaps ’83 PETER BRIDGWATER President and General Manager An astute with a businesman diversified ‘background, 46-year-old Peter Bridgwater was appointed General Manager in August 1982 and President in January of this year. The Lancashire native has been a detective, army officer, regional bank manager and General Manager of a major British conglomerate alongside which he has maintained an interest in soccer both at the professional and amateur levels. Bridgwater worked quiety in the Whitecaps’ background in 1980 handling player negotiations and contracts and among the many deals he worked out included those that brought head coach John Giles and playing/ assistant Peter Lorimer to Vancouver. JOHN GILES Head Coach The NASL’s Coach of the Year in 1982, John Giles enters his third season as head coach of the Vancouver Whitecaps with a 42-27 all-time record — his 589 winning percentage ranking sixth on the NASL's all-ume coaching hist. Long regarded one of the finest midfielders ever to play the game, Giles spent four seasons with Manchester United, 11 glory seasons with Leeds United in England. While at Leeds he collected F.A. Cup; League championships and European Cup Winners; Cup medals. He also spent two seasons as manager of England’s West Bromwich Albion. While there he took a struggling Second Division club into the elite of the First Division where they remain today. A native of Dublin, Giles also represented his country a record 60 times NOBBY STILES Reserve Coach/ Director Youth Development One of the architects of England's dramatic 1966 World Cup triumph, the 40—- year-old Stiles is in his second season with the Whitecaps. Stiles spent 11 seasons with Manchester United and went on to also play for Middlesborough and Preston as well as manage at the latter.
