Students in freelancing course learn - and earn One of Capilano. College’ s most successful courses, Communications 190, will run again in ‘the: fall 1982 semester. * A... practical course in magazine. article writing, Cmns. 190 has led to publication for many of its students. “In general, about a third of any given class will break into print at least once before the end of the semester,” says instructor Crawford Kilian. “A couple of our students have sold articles for as much as $1,000. Most don’t do that well, but it’s not unusual for a student to carn $150 or $200 for work done in the course.” “One recent student,” Kilian adds, “batted better than .1000. She sold all three of her articles, one of them twice. A ttish magazine bought the United Kingdom rights, and a Canadian periodical bought it also.” Open to anyone in the community, Com- munications 190 requires each student to write three articles and submit them for publication in periodicals. Topic, length, and treatment are up to the student, who also researches likely markets. Who does the best in the course? “Someone with | something to say — men or women, old or young. People who enjoy reading. But the student who doesn’t read much, or who hindrance,” Kilian ‘believes. “One student wasn't even sure she belonged in the course — she'd never written a thing before. Her first article sold like a shot to the Province Magazine. Can you make a living as a freelancer? Not many can. But it’s casy to learn the basics. After that, you just need energy, imagination and determination. A hard- working freelancer might earn anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars a year. But your writing may also gain you advancement in your regular job, or entry into a new career. Good writers are in constant demand in ail fields, and a resume listing a publication or two will get special attention from any employer. One alumnus of the course, Kilian says, now writes regularly for business Magazines. Others sell regularly to Lower Mainiand petiodicals, sometimes with several articles in a single issue. “It’s getting to be unusual,” says Kilian, “to | find an issue of a local magazine that doesn’t: have“ " an article by a person who's gone through the course.” Kilian has published numerous articles himself, both in newspapers and in specialized journals, as well as a book on B.C.’s black Pioneers, two children's books, and three successful novels. The most recent was published this summer, and a fourth is scheduled for February 1983 publication.
