No bilingualism at night after 11 trying to follow the commentary of Jean Page and Georges Seltzer game on the French channel, and no anticipation or second guessing of what's to come. With Italy almost com- pletely recovered from their biggest blowout since 1938, and the jungles of the Amazon still silent in shock and dismay, there will be a slight lull around the world before preparations start in earnest for the 1986 Worid Cup of Soccer. The unprecedented coverage by Labatts and the CBC in Canada of the 52 game tournament, has raised interest in the game to a new level in North America. The U.S. picked up the CBC feed on their ESPN cable network and the Spanish network south of the border gave an extensive coverage to American audiences. Coupled with the fact that the U.S. soccer federation and the Canadian Soccer Association are making a pitch for 1986 if and when Colombia collapses, it is obvious that the World Game is going to overrun North America within one or two generations. Mind you, its highly unlikely that cither Canada or the U.S. could sponsor the event, given the problem of enough grass ficlds within a reasonable distance. No teams are going to pul up with travelling through different time zones for their matches in the final round. At the present time, ar- tificial fields are taboo, and are likely to remain so for a number of years yet, although if any one nation could put together the ‘facilities for hosting the games, it could be the United States. Whether or not the biggest sporting event in the world comes to North America or not in ‘86, the game has found many new supporters and admirers following the excitement of last month's extravaganza. The crowd's supporters of the various teams alone Can create a lift and excitement. One of the more memorable sights for one of the for- tunates in Spain was the scene before the Brazil- Scotland match way back in the first round with a joint conga line outside the stadium being led by those Brazilian drummers and a couple of Scottish pipers. Another unique aspect of the World Cup 1s_ the pleasure of being able to watch teams from all over the world cach stamping the game with their own degree of uniqueness. In spite of the well deserved Italian vic- tory, who will ever forget the artists of Brazil, sweeping Seven Seas and flowing over the field, adding a new dimension, not only to the game itself, but to the subliminal reactions of the spectator. Ah well, so much for 1982. So, now it’s on to '86, and with any kind of justice combined with luck, perhaps Canada just might be present. OH NO, NOT AGAIN: A great start for the CFL with the Lions thumping the Ti- Cats and the Edmonton Eskimos yawning their way over the Ottawa Rough Riders - a team which does not in any way match their name. While the fans of the winning clubs can feel some- what impressed with the victories, the owners around the CFL can do nothing but wince at what appears to be a continuation of last season. With only nine teams in the league, a tight com- petitive league is essential, especially considering the economic conditions. If the Ottawa Rough Riders continue their same insipid path, can you see anyone in their right mind going to see them? In a small league, the weak teams can have a far greater impact than can the strong teams. Football fans had better start lighting candles for some strong compctition across the country this year.
