at Southern Methodist
University apparently
couldn't spot the crror in this

in a basic grammar test that
about 840 of the 1.400
freshmen flunked recenuy.
The required test determines
whether students have a high
school proficiency in

language skills. Last year, 40
percent of the freshmen
failed.

“I'm concerned about the
forces in our culture chat
require us to teach grammar
and punctuation at this
level,” said the coordinator
of the freshman writing
program, Mitchell E. Smith.

The university hires 24
teachers to teach a class
called “Rhetonc”, which is
required for freshmen

brooch brought a world
record price of $1.48 million
and a-set of Clark Gable’s
buttons went for $28,000 at
Christie's fall auction, -
The diamond brooch, set
with five rabies weighing a
total 23.65 carats, was the
property of an American
. family since the last century.
“This unique piece is the
most expensive brooch in
the world and contributed
largely to the success of the
jewel sale,” a Christie's
spokesman said.

The bazaar is one of the
many fund-raising projects
of the Club to cover the
rising cost of ice rental and
to help finance four
precision teams for out of
town competitions. The Club
had a successful tupper-ware
party recently and a chicken
sale last week but more
money is needed for up-
coming competitions. Both
the senior and novice
precision teams won silver
medals at the B.C. Section
Championships at Kamloops
in March this year. The
novice team competed with
six other teams and the
seniors with four other
teams. The teams will
compete this Sunday at the
B.C. Championships and the
B.C. Sections next March.

Second prize for the raffle
