Heaven knows they've got enough people of their own to make things busy at the best of times so it is sensible to take advantage of the “locals only” = situation between October and April. Ever try to hail a cab on Oxford St. in July? Britain has everything going for it as a_ travel destination. History? If you run short of cathedrals, castles and museums in Britain you've obviously been there too long. Shopping? The recent slump in the pound doesn't make the Brits too happy but think of it this way: The slump in the Canadian dollar brought us scores of Americans that spent their little greenbacks like every day was dollar-forty-nine day We might just as well pass the favor on to Britain. The British are geared for tourists. Things are different enough to be in- teresting yet familiar enough to be reassuring. With the current economics, tourists are staying home in droves. Hawaii is whimpering, the Caribbean is moaning but Europe is screaming. The traditional high prices of the last decade are getting a long look by the tourist authorities who seem to be doing something about it. Especiaily in England.
