Len Whitely, a native of Stockport, England, spent two years during World War Two in Stalag Luft 3 where he put his musical skills to work as camp entertainment officer. Instruments were ob- tained through the Red Cross and a band of 30 players was organized. As music was difficult to obtain Mr. Whitely wrote most of the music performed by the group. . On return to civilian life he worked in London with such-groups as the BBC TV Orchestra, and toured in the U.S.A. In the early 1950s Mr. Whitely immigrated to Canada and joined the RCAF as a musician. He spent some years in the Canadian Army’s Edmonton base during which he per- formed with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
