Special interest eroul control Dear Editor: , You won’t see them walking the Streets. with machine guns. You won't see marching army boots or tanks or trucks. ‘No, they’re hidden and very subtle. . They police us through intimi- dation and harassment. They have been successful in controlling what we can think and certainly what we can Say. ; The police I am talking about are the politically correct crowd, They are using many tactics to police us. A recent article in the Vancouver Sun illustrates my -. point. People with ICBC licence plates have ““WE--LOG’”’ on them, The environmental police complained to ICBC and they caved into the pressure. Why? Because it’s con- sidered politically incorrect. The ‘special interest groups in this country . have ‘become. the police to enforce Bill 33, ‘Militant ‘environmentalists, militant homosexuals, militant animal rights activists. — they all have set up a police force to make ‘sure no ‘one says anything against them. You no longer have the freedom . s trying to 4 « tino ughts to express your views if they go against any of these special inter- est groups. They have very subtly gained control of how you think, feel and how you might choose to express yourself in public. It’s interesting that these special interest groups have charged many people with harassment. Yet they can harass you anyway they choose to and the media portrays them as heroes of their cause. Let me give you cne final ex- ample. Suppose you believe homesex- uality is wrong. One of their policemen will harass you and call you homophobic, they will accuse you of being a bigot and a hate- filled fanatic, all because you ex- pressed a view that is ‘‘politically incorrect’? which simply means what they don’t like. We have been worried that Bili 33 would be passed and we would lose our right to express our views and opinions: The sad fact is, it’s already be- ing enforced by the police of special interest groups. The flack of adequate campus childcare became the focus for an occupation of the board of governors’ chambers after a woman was dared to pick the lock with a bobby pin, and suc- ceeded. The SFU women’s caucus met for the first time on C Sept. 11 of the same year. . SFU still has a_ thriving feminist community 25 ° years later, and we're. planning to celebrate our history with a women’s fair, an open house, a panel discussion and a party: We'd like to invite women from all over the Lower Mainland to come and help us celebrate on Oct. 4 and 5, at the beginning of Women’s History Month. Women’s Centre celebrates 25 years We'd also like to hear from women who have been part ef the women's movement in this part of the world, and who want to share some of their experi- ences.
