In Sex Tips for Modern Girls, Ed Astley is all those men — The Men, as it says in the program — the male objects of fear and desire of three women exploring life, love and modern relationships. In an intensive two-week im- provisation workshop putting the play together, women contributors bared their sexual souls; co-creator Astley came up with the male characterizations to match those experiences — five-year-olds to ski resort hunks. “As the show progressed, | (also) drew upon some of the in- securities that men have with women,” says West Vancouver's Astley, who will not reveal his age as he is ‘‘old enough to know better.” “They include those of men who I've talked to as well as some of my own.” Kicked out of choir at Kitsilano Secondary when his voice chang- ed — “sometimes | was a tenor and sometimes [| was a bass’’ STEPHEN BARRINGTON feature writer Astley was told by his school counsellor to take a typing class. He refused, took drama instead and has never regretted it. A founding member of Tamahnous Theatre along with fellow UBC grads Larry Lillo, John Gray and others, he counts among his favorite plays Hot Ice, True West, Bent and 18 Wheels. ‘4 like to make people laugh, have a good time,’’ says the man who won a Jessie Award for play- ing The Men. ‘’On stage you get your feedback right away, whether you're doing a good job or not.” Next week Astley and the rest of the Sex Tips cast — Kathie Ball, Frances Flanagan, Annabel Ker- shaw and John Sereda — will be at Presentation House for the play’s latest stop on its B.C. tour. Last playing at Presentation House in Tamahnous’ the Fresh Produce festival, Astley will add still more performances of The Men next week to the more than 600 already under his belt. “4 enjoy doing it a Jot, but the actual going to the theatre does get a bit tiring,” he says of his long-running role. “‘As soon as | get the first laugh of the show though, it’s not stale any more.” The day he auditioned for Sex Tips, he asked the women players why they wanted to do the play. The answer was, to try to change the world through faughter. After years of mounting the show, he hopes they have, even a tittle bit. “When we can laugh at ourselves and our differences, maybe we can realize all of our impossible dreams together.” The sextipsters perform at Pres- entation House Nov. 1 to 6, and theatre-goers should be prepared to hear songs such as Oh! K-Y Corale, Penis Envoy and others along the same lines. For details or tickets, call 986- 1351 or 687-1644.
