Durward fifth in UBC race NORTH VANCOUVER'S Lori Durward placed fifth overall in the women’s race at the Runners 10K held at the University of B.C. on Sunday. Durward, a member of the NorWesters and the UBC cross- country team, posted a time of 37 minutes and 55 seconds. She was also fifth in the women’s under- 35 age group. Leah Pells of Vancouver was the first woman to cross the finish line at 34:49. Bonni Walker of North Van- couver was ninth overall and first in her 35-49 age group with a time of 38:33. In the same age group, Janet Evans, also from North Vancouver, was third at 41:31. In the women’s 50-plus divi- sion, North Vancouver's Lenore Montgomery was first with a time of 45:18. In the men’s uwunder-40 age group, North Vancouver's Mark Shorter finished 16th and [8th overall in the very competitive men’s race with a time of 34:28. Scoring for the Belles were Kathryn Lynd and Tara Hodges with two each, Marcie Davis with one and Shendra Thorpe and Fiona Smith with two assists each. For the Debs, Michelle Mc- Cleary and Helen Oliphant tallied two goals each while Lisa Valleau added one goal. Alana Grey add- ed four assists for the Debs. In their second game of the week, the Belle A’s were outshot and outscored by a stronger junior provincial team who won 8-2. Liz Focant scored her first goal for the A team after moving up - from the B team while Lynd con- tinued her scoring streak. In other action, the Petite B’s defeated Richmond 7-5. Stand- out players include goalie Karen Taylor, Lisa Wheeler, Pam Garnett, Jennifer Donohue and Sarah Ivany. under-35: Yvonne Jennings scores third goal for Michigan squad JUNIOR RIGHT wing Jason Jennings of West Vancouver scored his third geal of the season for the Western Michigan Univer- sity hockey team in last weekend’s split against Bowling Green State. The WMU Broncos lost 5-4 at home on Friday but won 6-5 in Bowling Green, Ohio on Satur- day. Jennings opened the scoring on Saturday with a powerplay goal at 9:06 of the first period. It was his second power play tally of the year.
