NEWS photo Nei} Lucente Free lectures address seniors’ housing issues WITH THE ongoing housing crunch and rising rental costs, housing choices are a major con- cern, especially to seniors. As part of an ongoing series, North Shore Community Services is offering two free afternoon lectures on housing options for seniors. The first lecture will be held at West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre on Friday, May 3. The se- cond lecture will take place at Forum on abuse of elderly WHY DOES abuse of the elderly happen? What can we, as individ- uals or as a community, do to tespond appropriately to help the vulnerable elderly? These are the type of questions which will be addressed at a public forum on Abuse of the EI- derly; A Community Response at the Lucas Continuing Education Centre, 2132 Hamilton Ave., starting at 7:30 p.m. on May 6. “With an increasing number of the population aging, this is a highly relevant topic that needs to be addressed,’’ according to Pearl McKenzie, Director of the Seniors’ Independence Program at North Shore Community Services. Mckenzie, together with a panel consisting of counseliurs and speakers from seniors’ centres, the RCMP, Long Term Care/ Continuing Care, North Shore Crisis Services, and North Shore Community Mental Health will respond to this issue with infor- mation specific to the North Shore. Speakers will also explore the pros and cons of buy- ing or renting an apartment, ex- plain the meaning of such legal terms as strata titles and interim agreements as well as examine the rights and responsibilities of te- nants.
