48 - Sunday, December 6, 1987 - North Shore News Winter constellations explored at planetarium EXPLORE the mystery of the Christmas Star and took at the myths and traditions that have surrounded the bright constellations of winter for thousands of years in Winterlude. This special presentation is at the H.R. MacMillan Planetarium, runn- ing through to January 3. In the warmth and comfort of the Planetarium theatre, Winterlude takes us away from the bright city lights and back to a time when the stars of the Big Dipper represented hunters in pursuit of a mighty bear; when Orion the hunter and Taurus the bull battled in the heavens; and when a strange star in the East heraided the birth of a King. Biblical references to a Christmas Star have baffled astronomers for centuries. Although several events in the early first century BC seem to be likely candidates, the mystery only becomes clear when we examine the sky through the eyes of the magi — ancient astrologer/priests. Joyful music of the season, a glimpse at ancient astrology, and a look at the stars and planets in Vancouver’s winter sky make Winterlude a delightful holiday treat for the whole family. Showtimes are 2:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with extra shows at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays, and daily from December 19 through January 3. There will be no shows on Christmas Day. Admission is $4 per person; $10 for families. OPEN SUNDAYS ‘TILL’ CHRISTMAS ‘MON. - SAT. 9:30- 6.
