Van council A 76-FOOT steeple proposed for a new, tradi- tionally-designed Roman Catholic Church has some West Vancouver District neighbor reactions. Although the architect and church officials had surveyed the neighborhood around the 595 Keith Rd. site and received no negative responses, council decided Monday to send out information and book a public meeting for Dec. 14 to listen to local concerns. The steeple would not block ex- isting views or be generally visible due to tall trees in the area, but some council members were con- cerned that the steeple, or perhaps just the cross atop it, would be visible from Lions Gate Bridge. “A tower carrying a cross is traditional. To Christians it is preferable to have the cross visi- ble,’ pointed out architect Oberto Oberti. Another concern was that the 20’ by 20° dimensions of the stee- ple were too massive aad that the possibility of a bell in the tower might mean noise for the neighbors. Council members concerned about By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer Oberti explained that the steeple had been shortened from 85’ and then widened to be in proportion with the building. Ald. Rod Day approved of the design of the church and steeple. **] don’t think that the vision of a cross or church steeple is visual pollution or that the sound of church bells is audio pollution,’’ Day said. Day pointed out that the steeple would only be two stories higher than the 45° church. The other council members were complimentary of the design of the church, but wanted assurances that the neighbors knew what kind of structure was proposed. Mayor Don Lanskail suggested an information Jetter be sent out to area residents, but Ald. David Finlay pushed for a_ public meeting.
