In this collection, Canada’s jew- elry designers incorporate unusual materials such as feather, ebony, onyx and steel into their designs to create a modern style that works with contemporary fashion but is classic enough to last through the years. The theme for this year’s annual competition, the New Solitaire, challenged the designer to create an outstanding piece of jewelry that is a showcase for one beautiful diamond solitaire. The 1987 competition invited jewelry designers to create their ultimate diamond design in the category of women’s diamond jewelry. Each entry was to contain one solitaire diamond of one carat or more set in analternate substance either in addition to or in place of a precious metal. Over 170 entries were received, a record number in the history of the competition, and many of the designs: submitted were brooches reflecting the growing trend towards jewelry. Three brooches were selected as award-winners, The shoulder-baring dresses so popular titis year demand the presence of an exquisite necklace, and many women would be thrilled to wear any one of the four award-winning necklace designs included in the collection. The use of alternate materials, including steel cable, translucent chrysophrase, an apple green semi-precious stone, and anodized aluminum in these pieces reveals new and exciting ways to showcase the beauty of a carat diamond. Each of the designs submitted to the competition were judged on the basis of quality in design, craft- smanship and material, with a focus on The New Solitaire theme. The judges, each respected for their expertise in either jewelry or fashion, included Liz Dolan, man- ager of the Diamond Information Centre in the United States, and technical advisor Mark Libman, vice-president of Libman and Company, one of Canada’s largest diamond jewelry manufacturers. The collection will tour retail stores across Canada for one year.
