ry spell creates hazard NORTH VANCOUVER District firefighters battled a hast of small bush fires over the past few days as the fire hazard condition was listed as extreme Monday. istrict fire department Capt. Bert Batt said Tuesday firefighters put out five small fires in wooded or treed areas in the district from Aug. 27 to 30. Firefighters also reported and attended to two illegal bonfires in parks. The entire district is observing a partial closure of parks und wooded areas, meaning severe restrictions on smoking, fires and matches in the tree areas. If residents spot smouldering brush or a fire, officials suggest they try to put it out if possible. ‘If it's small enough, contain it,” said Batt. Otherwise, residents should call the fire department immediately fo prevent the fice from spreading, ‘*The important thing is to pet help,"’ he added. B.C. Forest Service duty officer Dave Naud said Tuesday the fire hazard rating was raised to extreme Monday following a lengthy spell of hot weather. “That means all logging operations are on early shift,’” he add- ed. “They have to be all finished and then on their way out of the bush by f p.m."" . The added hot weather is expected to continue at least until the weekend. Shoplifters slip by police A POLICE search for two young shoplifters who were spotted stealing a quantity of cigarettes in a North Vancouver supermarket turned up empty last week, North Vancouver RCMP said that five minutes before closing time Thursday, two teenaged youths entered the store and went to an. unopened check-out counter where they both started to stuff cartons of cigarettes into their jackets. A store employee grabbed one of the (wo youths, but the teenager broke free. A police search of the area following the theft failed to find the suspects. Merchants should call the RCMP community policing section for assistance in deterring cigarette thefts. ‘Cigarettes seem to be taken quite a tot recently,’’ said RCMP Cst. Cliff Doherty. Woman arrested for impersonation! A VANCOUVER woman was arrested in North Vancoyver recent- ly for impersonation and using forged documents. North Vancouver RCMP said that Bonnie May ‘avitz, 44, of 4502 West Fourth Ave. in Vancouver, was remanded in custody to Sept. 1. A police investigation centring on life insurance policies and claims continues, and further charges are penaine. Police do not believe the woman was operating as part of a ring. Pair jailed for B&E, theft TWO MEN of no fixed address were sentenced Thursday in North Vancouver provincial court to two years in jail after they pleaded guilty to a charge of break, enter and theft. Jordi Lamb, 23, and Wayne Wendland, 20, were originally charged jointly with five charges of break and enter and one charge of break, enter and theft in connection with a string of burglaries alleged to have occurred at six different businesses in the 1800- block of Capilano Road. Lamb was also charged with possession of stolen property in connection with police seizure of a gold lighter. Appearing before Judge W.J.
