By KIM PEMBERTON News Reporter The 20-member department decided to hold a safety day last week in order to raise money to buy the ‘jaws of life.’" But three days before the event the department was able to pur- chase an older model of the extrac- tion equipment from another fire department, which had recently purchased new equipment. Chief Bryan Johnson said the members decided to go ahead with the fund-raising event to buy aux- iliary safety equipment. About 40 Lions Bay families took part and together they donated more than 31,000. “We now have that extra margin of safety with the jaws,’ said Johnson. “They make quite a large dit- ference in extraction (of victims), with speed and efficiency.” He said new models are more light-weight, but Lions Bay has enough manpower to handle the older model of the jaws of life. Lions Bay's response area is from Sunset Beach to Porteau Cove or about 10 miles along the Squamish Highway. Johnson said in the past the departinent has had to requesi assistance from West Vancouver and Squamish, whose fire depart- ments both have extraction equipment. “We had two (car accidents) back to back in a short period of time, and it made everyone more aware of the need,’’ Johnson said. “At any rate we now have the jaws and the (highway’s) missing link has been filled."* On March 8, a 22-year-old woman suffered spinal injuries after the car she was a passenger in LIONS’ BAY firefighter Frank MeVeigh, far left, shows youngsters how to Operate water pressure on a pumper during a community Safety Day at Lions Bay Beach fast Sunday.
