Drillers take N. By JOAN PAYNE DRILLERS WON the playoff championship with a convincing 5-1 victory over the Canadians in Senior Hockey action. Larry Barker was the in- dividual star with three goals, with linemate Ed Collins col- lecting a goal and two assists. Jim Tapp gave the Canadians a 1-0 lead near the end of the first period. Barker tied it up off a faceoff midway through the second, then beat the Canadians defence early in the third to give the Drillers the lead. John McCormick made it 3-1 in a goalmouth scramble during a power play two minutes later. Barker put the game out of reach with a brilliant solo ef- fort, beating three men. and slipping the puck thru Gary Hallsy’s legs. Collins scored a shorthanded goal on a 2-on-1 break with Pat Furlong to complete the scoring. Keith Gibson and the Driller defence kept the Canadians frustrated during the second and third periods. Old Buzzards took third spot defeating the Old Crows 4-2, paced by Greg Smith’s hat trick. Smith scored the only goal in the first period on a pass from Rolly Lefeb- vre. In the second period Smith gave the Buzzards a 2-0 lead with a shorthanded goal. Tom Davenport scored twice later in the second to tie the game, tipping in Ron Brown’s backhand shot, then knocking home a rebound from a scramble in front of Keith Major. The game stayed tied until late in the third, when Smith completed his hat trick fin- ding the short side on a pass from Aimie Lehouillier. Ron‘ Chapman added an insurance goal on a pass from Howie Carty. Firefighters continued to dominate the Warriors, skating to a 3-1 victory to earn fifth spot. Eric Virs shovelled in his own rebound with 17 seconds teft in the first period to open the scor- ing. Eearlier Randy Clements had made a spectacular save in the Firefighter’s goal robb- ing Jim Nichols. After a scoreless second period, Rick Goboloff doubl- ed the score from a scramble in front of the Warrior goal. Jim Klipa made it 3-0 on a pass from Bob Verner, before Duncan Vickers broke Clements’ shutout bid on a pass from Norm Rettiec.
