The unex pected expulsion of Dave Barrett
from the legislature has surprised and upset
many British Columbians. Was this the only
recourse for acting speaker John Parks or is
this sign of an arrogant and_ ruthless
government?

It is pretty sad. 1 don’t
believe Barrett was guilty
of misconduct and the ex-
pulsion was unfair. The
Social Credit party should
back down and allow Dave
Barrett back into’ the
legislature.

Credit party. As leader of
the opposition, Barrett had
every right to voice his opi-

Praise for president
as new shelter opens

WEST VANCOUVER ceremonies a week ago not
only opened that municipality’s new SPCA facili-
ties but paid tribute to president Marie Moscovitch,

the woman behind them.

‘She is absolutely ter-
rific,’’ said Mayor Derrick
Humphreys of Moscovitch
during brief ceremonies to
mark the opening. ‘‘She has
not done it alone, of course,
but she has been the lead
hand.’”’

As president of the West
Van branch of the SPCA,
Moscovitch was instrumental
in both pushing for the new
home for wayward cats and
dogs and in designing the
structure.

lt features spacious and
comfortable facilities for
animals under the SPCA’s
care, with separate kennels
for problem animals and ex-
pectant and nursing mothers
and a host of other in-
novative features.

Frank Morms, City direc-
tor of development and licen-
sing services, told Ald. Ralph
Hall, a Seabus commuter,

that the wooden entranceway
at the north end of the
Seabus is necessary for
pedestrian safety.

Construction is taking
place on a site just beside the
Seabus terminal, and the
wooden walls are part of the
legally-required hoardings,
Morris said.

Humphreys, in a tongue-
in-cheek tribute to
Moscovitch said: ‘‘She has

out.”’

Humphreys said ‘‘this
wonderful building’’ would
match other recent new struc-
tures in the municipality.

‘*Frankly,’’ he added, ‘‘l
think I’ve stayed in some
motels that are a lot worse
than this.’’

Other guests at the opening 9
included Human Resources
Minister Grace McCarthy
who did not take part in the
ceremonies.

McCarthy’s attendance
did, however, require the
presence of at least six West
Vancouver policemen for
security.
