on immigration Dear Editor: According to Ottawa there are now some 30,000 illegal immigrants in British Columbia, most of them in the VanccuVer area. They are taking jobs from our own people. Either that or they are attending our schools, using our health services or on welfare. They are not here legally but they are _being supported _b ~~ taxpayers nevertheless. Ottawa is talking about openings, skills, housing etc. is taken into account. British Cglumbia, on the Pacific Rin with its 1,500 million population, is en- tering an era in which long distance travel will be commonplace. Migration of people on a large scale is not only possible but, some say. inevitable. ——“amnesty for thésé people. So our Provincial Govern- ment is being drawn into the debate. Not only is Federal immigration policy tor lack of policy) costing provincial taxpayers a bundle but B.C., as a province, has a legal position to protect also. Under our Constitution (formerly the British North America Act) authority over immigration is shared equally between Canada on the one hand and _ the receiving province on the other. Confirmaton of this fact ts to be found in the - Quebee-Gttewa; - Nova—Sociat Credit and NDP. Scotia-Ottawa and Saskatchewan-Ottawa = agr- eements on immigrant flows. The receiving province in each case screens the im- migrants headed their way. The provincial view as to job 25% off All Fabrics REUPHOLSTERY & SLIPCOVER SALE BC. We in this provin “therefore have to make up our minds. How many people do we want to have in _. ‘B.C. in the year 2000? How will we house’ them, especially on the Lower the Mainland. How will we assimilate large numbers with different backgrounds ~ and different aspirations? And what impact will they have on our institutions, our “fragile” environment etc.? Ottawa with its eastern preoccupation and _ its bureaucratic mentality wilt be slow to aet. British Columbians, therefore, must have their say. But the silence in Victoria is deafening. Monday to Thursday 980-2761 of the site at Dear Editor: One might head up this letter as “Thanks and No Thanks”. I refer to two statements accredited to our new Mayor, Marilyn Baker in your paper dated Wed- nesday, December 29, 1982. Thanks would be for her Statement that the live, Phone in “Town Hall” meetings on Cable 10 will be reinstated again this year, an event which I feel I played some small part in Originating during .the time of Mayor Don Bell's term of 5 . The “No Thanks” would be for her recommendation iVig Che Ris Highway just north of Main Street as a specific Video Amusement Arcade Zone, just about a good block from where I live. The fact is that the one already located there has to use a vulgar expression, gone belly up, much to the satisfaction of some local residents. No doubt due to the lack of customers. Now if there is such a concern for such an arcade I would = suggest zoning an area where there are bound to be a preater number of eager young people anxious to improve 7 30-400 BURGERS—BURGERS—BURGERS— BURGERS their contact with the computer age. One suggestion would be in the 1900 Block Rivergrove Place or failing that on the top of Grouse Mountain. Happy New Year to all 10 oz.
