ht B12 - Sunday, April 18, 1982 - North Shore News EEE entertainment Anna Wyman ANNA WYMAN Dance Theatre’s premiere at the Queen Elizabeth Playhouse Thursday was a celebration not only of dance but of color and shape and fantasy as well. Innovative is the most obvious word for Anna Wyman’s choreography and the choice of dances for the gala premiere only em- phasized this. The only) production which was not new to Vancouver audiences was Hamartia, a dance based on Picasso’s Man Sitting. It is intensely human and strongly emphasizes both the emotional and physical aspects of being human. Adastra, a purely outlandish piece of fantasy does everything to disguise the human charactenstics of the dancers. Gravity seems nonexistent, the dancers are masked and marvellously costumed and their shapes and movements are far from that of conventional human motion and form. Theatre The costumes’ were handpainted by Fritz Jacobsen in vivid flashes of color and abstract shapes. Celebrating more than just dance They are even more vivid against the colorless, and fairly simple set which takes on the wonderful effect of a waving, bubbling, definitely non terrestrial surface. And it was carned off with great skill and precision by the eight member company. An entirely different mood was created in the soft romanticism of Cadenza, another new work set to Andre Gagnon's Mes Quatre Saisons. It was delicate and lovely. Mainly a duet for Dianne Garrett and Denise O'Brien, it was a nice balance for the more vigorous pieces. Not quite as successful was the opening number, Anna Wyman Dance Theatre on Tour. It had lots of skillful mime and humor but never quite came together. Following the per- formance, Jack Shadbolt's interpretation of Adastra was unveiled at the Van- couver Art Gallery where a 25th anniversary celebration for the Canada Council was held. There was lots to celebrate.
