No More Sex War, The Failures of Feminism, by Neif Lyndon, Man- darin Paperbacks, 250 pp., paper MAGINE MY surprise at finding Neil Lyndon’‘s politically incorrect diatribe at a university bookstore. Needless to say, it was not located on the table overflowing with new feminist releases. No More Sex Wars is a pugnacious piece of writing, Lyn- don dons his boxing gloves and takes swipes at the most popular feminist claims, from violence against women to paternal rights. It is a bold undertaking and a welcome relief, One tires of being browbeaten by endless claims of patriarchal suppression. Lyndon launches into his premise with gusto, revelling in the opportunity to trash the feminist creed. He is angry because he is an idealist, a pro- duct of the ‘60s who expected that era to usher in positive changes. Why didn’t it happen? The divisive politics of the feminists, says Lyndon. He believes that feminism actually in- hibited rather than liberated socie- ty. While the feminists were busy securing social and economic benefits for women, he writes, ‘a shadow ... of neglect has fallen upon the realities of life for men.” Feminism merely succeeded in erecting what Lyndon calls a “babel of intolerance and casuistry.”” , The foundation of the feminist creed, he says, is that all women’s ills are caused by patriarchy, and furthermore that patriarchy repre- sents some kind of conspiracy against women. But Lyndon argues that if society is set up to benefit men only, then how come they're getting the short end of the stick? He argues convincingly, if hot- headedly, that political institutions that have been labelled patriarchal _ by feminists are not inherently “mate.” : He states: “The economic forces which shape them are im- personal, genderless, neutral.”’ As for the idea that women must adopt male mannerisms in order ‘to survive these “male” institu- - . ae BRAND NEW ‘92 VW PASSAT SYNCHO Every option available, full 3 yr. warranty, 48 mu. lease $428 ‘ . + PST & CST , Based on $5000 down cash or trade-in value ‘89 AUDE 200 TUHHO 75,000 hin, whiterblre int, 18 mo. tease 429° + PST & GST, buy nut 811,900 “QO FORD 12 TON Regular bos, white, only 44,000 ki, 5.0 Tee, auto, hal. uf feetory warramy, Purchase 811499, or lease for 27 mos, $259 pee ena, plus faves 82 VOYAGER S.E. 7 passenger. But let me quote here to get the full effect of his rhetoric: “That strikes me as being one of the more pustulent lines of piss in the crock of cant which is modern feminism.” Lyndon teads us along easily with his friendly Socratic conversa- tion, He has us agree to certain points then ambushes us with new and startling conclusions. He quotes * female feminists making preposterous statements about men and asks us, if men made these statements about women ar if we replaced the word “man” with a race such as “whites” or “blacks,” would the statement go unnoticed? Not. He takes the feminists to task for making sweeping generalizations about men and their evil, in-bred behaviors. But, he points out, it’s a neces- sary task for them to attack men as the evil-oppressor-class since Marxism is their ideology, This he outlines in some detail, linking the make no paymen! interest vat Oct 3193 (on 39 proved credill 939990... Kate Millett was the first to con- nect the idea of segregation of races with that of segregation (ie. oppression) of sexes. From there, it was a Pandora's box of accusa- tions and arguing for the ‘‘{ree- ing’ of woman from her op- pressor, Thus, rather than being an exer- cise in equality, feminism became an outright war on men. Although feminists claim ita vie- tory that women can now par- ticipate in economic life, Lyndon says the working woman is not the product of radical thought but of technology. Untamed fertility. Once technology introduced contraceptive freedom in the form of the Pill and abortion, women were free to enter society beyond the family. But this was not thanks to feminist placard waving, says Lyn- don, It was conducive te the re- quirements of capitalism.
