Women hare it Jan-Christian Sorensen News Reporter Jsorensen@nsnews.com WARNING: this video con- tains naked women riding mountain bikes full-tilt through North Shore trails. Not your standard warning label, but it applies to the closing sequence to the locally-filmed and produced short) movie Wiel Women. The project was conceived, directed and produced entirely by local rider Selena Lawrie and Vancouver's Anne Walton. “It was a completely out-of-the- blue thing one day when we were filming,” explained Walton. “We said “Why don’t we just ride nude?” “The person who was filming was focusing on these ferns so you can’t really quite tell what's going on, and then she goes into focus as all these white bums are climbing onto bikes and riding away scream- ing.” A little wild. A little bit Bohemian. “It’s a different type of monn- tain biking movie, though,” »aid Walton. And it’s just the beginning. Lawrie and Walton only made Wheel Women to serve as a trailer to attract sponsors for a larger, half- hour project called Dirt Divas, which they hope to have finished in Frceptional Winter Traction on the purchase of 4 Goodyear Ulva Grip Winter Tires. But caly uni! December 31, 20091" time for the 2001 edition of the Vancouver International — Film Festival. Both women travelled to Bantf - Fecently to showcase Wheel Women at the 25th annual Banff Mountain Film Festival, where it attracted a full house. Wheel Women was tilmed on a three-chip, Sony digital cam. It took four months from genesis through to finished product. Making the movie was a learning experience for both women, ‘said Lawrie. “I don’t have any back- ground in film, just an interest. So in beginning to film this, it was an exciting idea. Not only were we _ combining our interest in mountain biking with our interest in ensuring the sport is accessible to women, but we were also pursuing our desire to learn how to make these movies.” The subject matter was no stranger to either Lawrie or Walton, however. Both log a fair 2mount of time navigating North Shore biking trails on a regular basis. Lawrie also races cross country while Walton competes in downhill events. “The great thing is that we're doing a subject matter we know. I think it would have been a lot hard- er if we had to do something that didn’t fall into our everyday type of life,” said Lawrie. Wheel Women premiered at the Vancouver Mountain Film Festival last February. Since then, it’s been the toast of the mountain film fest circuit, winning a director’s award at the Alpen Film Fest in New York and making the cut at other events in Whistler, Seattle, Calgary and Toronto. Of the five women fea- tured on Wheel Women, two — Lawrie and Canadian mountain biking champion Barb [ for mountain biking Haley — hail from the North Shore. Whistler's Sylvie Allen is also profiled. There was no script to speak off Walton and Lawrie simply tilmed the women riding around the North Shore and then inserted interviews later on. “The idea was to help to profile women who are mountain biking because primarily all the video mar- ket now i: iast about guys,” said Lawrie. “What we found out in making this is that there are far more women riding and tar more women riding at an excellent level than you really know. It’s amaz- ing.” With the runaway success of the wailer, it leaves a daunting chal- lenge for Walton and Lawrie when it comes to the production of Dirt Divas. “The trailer’s already gone way past our expectations,” said Walton, who works as a translator at a fran- cophone preservation society based in Coquitiam’s Maillardville.. “It was just meant to be a marketing | piece so we could get some funds to ~ make the longer film.” The pair have been hard at work filming footage for Divas since April, travelling to mountain biking competitions in California in the summer to document the success of local women riders. a Walton said that there’s a dis- tinct possibility that this movie may be only the first of a series of movies by Dirt Divas company both formed before mak- - ing Wheel Women. “t think when we put together Dirt Divas productions (Selena) - and I though it would be neat to cover different women doing differ- ent sports, but whether or not we continue on the mountain biking. trend is totally up in the air. It’s more of a passionate hobby for us: than a career, so I think it’s going to be whichever way the wind blows ....
