of the Trans-Canada
Trail was announced
Oct. 8 by Lou Sekora,
MP for Port Moody-
Coquitlam-Port
Coquitlam, on behalf
of Human Resources
Development Canada.

One hundred young peo-
ple between 16 and 24 will
be employed = on 20
Environment Youth Teams
(E-Teams) throughout the

rovince to develop about
150 kilometres of the trail in
B.C.

When complete, the
Trans-Canada trail will
stretch 15,000 km across the
country, linking thousands of
communities ii every
province and territory.

The federal and provincial
governments and Traiis B.C.
are cach contributing one-
third of the $960,000
required for the project.

Human Resourees
Development Canada will
provide wages for crew mem-
bers, while the province will
provide project management,
safety monitoring and fund-
ing for supervisors. Trails
B.C., a community-based
volunteer organization, will
pay for building materials

and transportation,

E-Team crews will work
on the trail in the following
areas:

a Lower Mainland
Abborstord, Burnaby,
thilliwack, West Vancouver);

a Vancouver Island

(Shawnigan Lake, Duncar);

BW Okanagan (Kelowna,

Kettle Valley, Penticton,

Princeton);

sition from school to work
and get their first job, in
partnership with businesses,
non-governmental organiza-
tions, communities and other
levels of government.

The completion of the
B.C. portion of the Trans
Canada trail is the province's
first millennium project.

The E-Team is a $11.25
million youth job creation
program within the provin-
cial governments Youth
Options B.C. umbrella.

The goals of the program
are to improve the environ-
ment, provide young people
with practical employment
and training experience and
create ‘environmental and
outdoor recreational
legacies.
