MUSIC Air underwater North Shore band releases second CD IF jazz-infiised funky rock is your bag, a dive into Breathe Underwater’s second inde- pendently released CD could well refresh the spirit. Dino DiNicalo, fon Roper and Frank Baker work out theit *collee- ve screwing around process” with some raw, live-off the-Moor panache on Unédeliever Dino, a North Shore resident, and Frank first worked together in an akiernative funk band called Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Frank spent time with other rack and jazz projects before linking with Dino. Dino sings, plays bass and harmonica for Breathe Underwater. Frank pounds the skins. Together they're a tight rhythm section. With Jon joining in’ on guitar and vocals, the group cuts 2 path of focused intensity on its lacest disc. The trio admit to a plethora of influences. What makes the mix? Said Dino, “You're asking a guy who has way too many influences. ‘That's why the first CD was so screwed up. You could say that I really do like certain bands like Zeppelin or Stone Temple Pilots or Ben Harper, but I don’t think you can find them in the CD.” Said Jon, “I'm really intluenced by certain guitar players and writing: wise, right now I’m really into the band Too] and I like all the Soundgarden stuff. I still play a lot of jazz, fusion stuff and straight-ahead and I like Indian music.” For his part Frank went through a heavy 1980s influence. “Pm a big fn of a lor of dif ferent styles and drummers and | try to make the ideas or feels work. “We really get to play what we want to in this band. For rock music F've alw: ays admired the Police, especially being a three-piece band.” The adv antages of a three-piece configuration extend beyond the money saved sustaining a band on the road. Frank describes it this way: “I actually went through a lot of anxiety with Breathe Underwater. With every band P've worked with I’ve always had up to five pieces going through a P.A., and here to have just a gui- tar, bass and drums with vocals over top, I thought i it was going to be weak or we're not really going to get the ideas across to the people. NEWS phote Mike Wakefield DINO DiNicolo, Jon Roper and Frank Baker, collectively known as Breathe Underwater, can be heard on their second funk-rock CD, Unbeliever. Bur it didn’t happen that way. I chink this is great. You get closer personalities.” Dino sees the benefits of the basics in terms of the strength of connections made with his band- mates. “After being in Mr. & Mrs. Smith and being with five peopic in a band, it is hard to find people thar vou vork with, never mind being friends, but actually being z able to communicate musically in a way so that something can be pro- ductive rather than destructive. I know the place where it can be destructive.” Watch for the group's video for the track Come Tomorrow, shot with Sean Frewer and Moving Pictures Productions in January. 18 EATING ORGANIC’ IMPORTANT 10 YOU? It was this whole new sense of what the “team” was up to. So when I got back into acting I had a whole new comfort zone. The crew is your first audience, and there are times where you have a couple of days of work ‘out of a month long shoot . and you come in kind of ner- ‘vous because you don’t know - anybody and you wonder if they’re liking it. But after being a crew member I could easily suss out whether it was ‘working, or I got beyond car- ing, because I knew what they were up to. It gave me a good sense of how to behave, like a good person, and not become a primadonna which can hap- pen to alot of child actors. MV: Do have the desire to be in Hollywood? Ian: No, but when I was growing up thar was always in my mind that when I gor older 'd make the pilgrimage . to LA., but when char time came, T was into lighting and had planted a few more roots, so I put it off. Then I did Stakcout in 1988 which was really good for me, because it got me alot of publicity. Tr would have been a good time to go down so I made a brief journey, because some casting directors and agents had asked if P’'d come down, and spent about a week going around meeting, them. Same of them were wanting to sign me if I stayed, but at that time I really didn’t want to stay because Time and Again Antiquities 122 “9 50. 34 ue here. I wasn’t ready to move. I kind of thought that although I had been an actor for a long time, I wasn’t really ready to enter the “big time,” to get into the big swirl of things. I don’t know what it takes to make vourself think that you're ready. ] think I’m ready now because [’ve had a chance to do the calibre of work here that guys in L.A. scramble to do. They scramble tor lead parts in episodics and support- ing roles in films and I was able to get that up here with- out the masses of competiton that there is down there. There aren't tons of independent Canadian tea- tures that Pve had a chance to get into, but the independent market has really been blos- soming here and I’ve done a couple over the last few years but not lead roles. I can get leads in American episodics, but I haven’e cracked the independent scene here so Pm hoping this will open up that door for me. As w ell, T think Kupert’s Land has a European teci to it and ic will do well at the American and Canadian festivals and that will bring me more to the forefront as a lead actor in tilm rather than all the TV [ve been doing in the past decade. .
