Perched in a tower 15 floors above sea level
consulting mining engineer Ronald B. Stokesil
witnesses the grand patterns of a group off
approximately 1,000 Scoters and Scaups as the}
birds move in unison above and beneath thei
water. It’s an impressive display of nature. The
Scoters and Scaups winter in the area. They come
in close to the shore at Dundarave to feed on sea-f
weed.

“The interesting thing is that they are mot-
vated by the group. If one dives, the whole lorg
dives. It’s like thev’re pulled down on strings
They're amusing things to watch,” said Stokes.

.- The view trom his apartment suite is breath
taking and panoramic. Whenever there is some
thing unusual going on, he looks through his
telescope. He doesn’t like to miss anything,
“Sometimes vou see Pilot Whales come in
are alot of seals and vou see fish jumping.”

Asan exploration engineer he’s got a trained §
eve for the extraordinary.

“If T see something unusual as a person who
loves nature, FE like to observe it. That’s what Uf
look for,” he «aid.

Last week fe saw something very unusual out
on the water below. :

A white duck was in among a group of pre-
dominately grey and black birds. Stokes identi-
fied it as 2 Common Eider Duck. The male is
black and white with a green tinge on its nape. &

Somateria mollisima is plentiful in the Far
North, In West Vancouver it’s a rare duck. Said §
Stokes, “I think it’s just misguided. Where else
doss it have to go now? It got hooked up with
another duck or something.”
