A reader’s ransom note Dear Editor: A few days ago the rear signal on my car burned out. Just the signal lighr, nothing more. So thought. Unfortunately Toyota do not sell one light bulb and one socket. It is neces- sary to buy four sockets, all packaged together. The representative at the 1- 800 customer — service number said they could not do anything about it. It was packaged that way “because it can be done less expensively.” Less expensively to whom? My indicator light bulb and socket cost me an unavoidable $47.07. plus GST, labor, ete. Grand total $74.87. 1 don't doubt that manufacturers find a greater profit mar- gin in selling muttiple items, packed together ina lastic bubble than in sat- isfying the customer’s needs. But is the public going to be held to this -kind of ransom forever? J. Wolstenholme North Vancouver rurore Dear Editor: The current furor over developments along Mosquito and Wagg Creeks is purely political and has nothing to do with whatever fish may be in these streams. Claims by the environmen- talists, with the participation of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), that fish habitat in these creeks will be affected cannot be proven. The only structure that will affect the passage of fish in any stream is a dam, The Capilano River had a good fish run for many years, despite there being a hotel on its bank as well as a Jogging railroad. When the Cleveland Dam was built, the fish run died. The same applied to. the Seymour River, and it is only since hatcheries have been established below the dams that the fish are returning. The dams along the Columbia River destroyed that major fish- ery and now the Americans are constructing fish ladders and other facilities in an attempt to rebuild the runs, By contrast, the Fraser River, which has no dam, pro- vides the only major fishery in our area, This despite having HELPING THE WORLD | WRITE NOW CODE: Self-sufficiency through literacy in the developing world For information, call 1-800-661-2633 ALUMINART 32"x80" Z-LITE PROVINGIAL SCREEN DOOR - WHITE * Bottom screen ‘entiation 2 year limited warranty | pver NV creeks ‘p canneries, pulp mills, logging and sawmill activities, and docks on its banks as well as railroads on cach side. None of these has eliminat- ed the tish returning to spawn. If there is any part ofa river or stream that should be protect- ed, it would be the spawning areas. The areas being objected to are not spawning areas. Wayg Creek Park could conceivably be one, and it already has park protection. The Mosquito Creek spawning area was bull- dozed almost down to bedrock. a few years back to prevent a recurrence of the flood that took place in the 1950s. When a bulldozer was working in the bed of: Mosquito Creek preparing, the site for the new bridge foor- ings, nobody raised a voice in protest. Could it be that the envi- ronmentalists, and the DFO, felt it unwise to attack the fed- eral and provincial govern- ments over the widening of the Trans-Canada Highway? Can they only find the courage when they feel they can beat a » and friends, to Vancouver City to voluntarily ‘give away up to 30 metres of small municipality? DFO’s entry into this con- troversy is purely for political purposes, their record on protecting the cod stocks on the East Coast is not one to be proud of, nor is their record in some areas of protecting our West Coast salmon stock, The recent news reports that criticize their ignorance of environmental legislation has made it impera- tive they attempt to improve their image. Doing so by trying to enforce a land grab of up to 30 metres of land on either side of any stream that contains fish because “it’s in the book,” shows a complete lack of com- mon sense. The book was writ- ten by bureaucrats in Ortawa, and bureaucratic intelligence, particularly at the federal level, is an oxyinoron. For the DFO, their environmental ask = North land on each side of every creek within its boundaries, without at least offering com- pensation, is the height of fed- ERE lia RR RI ER ‘ (Capilano Dental Centre! , Dr Landsberger = Dr.Ho +; Dr. Tom = Dr. Goncalves % Are pleased to announce new fail hours j Mon. 7am-Spm Tues. 7am-5pm Wed. 7am-9pm Thurs 7am-9pm Fri. 7am-5pm Sat. 8am-Spm NEW PATIENTS WELCOME 986-952 1 INSIDE CAPILANO MALL 1 935 MARINE DR., NORTH PROFESSIONALLY TRAINED . The proposed martial arts studio is a clean, non- -polluting facility. “Martial arts” is an Asian term generally misunder- stood in the West. There may not be any racism in the envi- ronmentalists’ objection to this faciliry, but the connotation is there, Their objection to the siting of the adult day care centre is harder to fathom. The people using, that facility will be the frail elderly, many of whom will be blind, some will be deaf, some will have mental prob- Jems and many will be in wheel chairs, To suggest that moving everything five metres or more from the creek bank will help cither the fish or these people is ridiculous.
