Comparison shop, using the drape
and softness of high-priced ctothing,
the way the lining and seams are fin-
ished, thickness of fabric and the way
it fits your body as a reference,

Compare the weave of fabrics. A
higher thread or yarn count (and
tighter weave) thickeas fabne, giving
it, more structure and durability.
Lightweight top-quality fabric may
tse more yarns, but they will be finer
and of a high quality.

Check how a garment is made. It
should hang well. not pull or pucker
ata seam. Fabric patterns should
match at seams; pleats and gathers
should be evenly spaced: collars
should roll over the neckline, not lie
flat. Inside seams should be gener-
ous. with even stitches. The lining.
which helps clothing hold its shape,
should be well constructed of good
fabric.Clothing is enhanced by well-
placed well-made details like but-
tons. zippers and pockets, and cheap-
ened by poor ones.

An item from Nina’s Boutique in
North Vancouver reveals the quality
of a lemon yellow jacket designed by
Peter Nygard. Lined in taffeta, the
heavy-weight pure silk crepe is fine-
ly stitched. The collar rolls softly
over the neck, revealing quality inter-
facing, sleeves are tailored and cuffs
adomed with quality buttons. A half-
belt is attached to the back of the
jacket with true button holes and a
button at either side.

Read the label

The fabric content, brand name,
country of origin and care instruc-
tions can be informative.

If you are unfamiliar with the
label or if there are no washing
instructions, ask a sales clerk.

Choose natural fibre content over
a synthetic one, not overlooking syn-
thetics, which may have a unique
texture or characteristic.

Also, a manmade fibre mixed
with natural fibres can enhance the
characteristics: of a fabric. It may
become lighter weight, stronger, eas-
ier to clean, resistent to wrinkling. It
may add holding power to pleats or
provide a better fit.

on the care of this always-
popular wardrobe staple?

o Like all garments, sweaters require atten-

© tion - especially with stains. When a spill
occurs, don’t rub the affected area. Particularly in
the case of silk or silk-blend sweaters, rubbing cre-
ates friction, which causes fibers to break. Just blot
the stained area. Be sure to clean silk sweaters
often, as perspiration weakens and dissolves silk. To
Tnaintain the shape of your sweaters, folding is rec-
ommended. Hanging them can cause stretching
and loss of shape. Acrylic sweaters are more prone
to stretching than silks, especially in the callar, cuff,
and waistband areas - so always take care not to
streich these areas unnecessarily. Once stretching
has occurred, the acrylic sweater cannot be restored
to its original shape, Most importantly, because of
its low tolerance to heat, an acrylic sweater must be
kept away from hot objects, which can cause melt-

ing and yellowing.
