AN ENVIRONMENTAL group claims that old-growth trees will fall in the Seymour Demonstration Forest (SDF) if the Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD)) supports a logging recom- mendition. iby laa Neble ‘nate w stenemensemansanransersncan ans erentsef News Reporter The future of the SDF is up for debate ata GVRD water committee meeting Friday. The Society Promoting Environmental Conservation (SPEC) does not like the recommended option. SPEC executive director Paul Hundal said (wo of the areas now tinder consideration for logging are prime old-growth stands, One area that may be cut, he said, ts pictured on the front of a GVRD annual report. “One yeir they show it as a pic- ture of beauty. Now they want to log it” One of the conditions of the rec- ommendation to the water commit- tee is that the SDF will become a luboratory for the new B.C. Forest Practices Code. Hundal said, however, the “biggest and oldest” stands do not have to be targeted to demonstrate logging. “They should be demonstrating logging in second-growth areas, if anywhere.” The four options being consid- ered by the water committee are a demonstration forest, a demonstra- tion watershed, a park, or ceasing GVRD programs in the SDF, ‘ North Vancouver councillor Barhara Perrault, who also sits on the GVRD's water conmmittee, sup- ports the recommended demonstra- tion forest option. She says the SDF provides an opportunity to educate people about forest practices, while adding she only agrees with cutting trees if taey present a danger or problem to the forest. “Vin very careful on this one.” Although she wants part of the demonstration forest to remain pris- tine wilderness, she does not sup- port making the SDF a park because parks already exist in the aired. Port John Moody Mayor G) exe é ib dds He Northey, who chairs the water com- mittee, sid the recommended option before the commitice has not been accepted and is merely the consensus reached by committee members ata Nov, 2 workshop. He said the option will allow (ree removal. He added, however, that anything that happens in the SDF will first be subject to an eco- logical assessment. ° He said some portions of the park inerit higher uses than logging. such as recreation, and should never be touched. Northey added the recommenda- tion could be interpreted in any way. Some of the mare “bloody- minded” about it could take it to mean every piece of harvestable timber will be pulled out, he said. He said the committee is trying to look atall issues in the SDP ina balanced way. Dr. William Liebenberg Inc. B.Sc., B.DS. (Rand) is pleased to announce the opening of his new clinic.
