McCredie Automotive Reporter Bosae Trading Ltd, a Pierard Road company in North Vancouver, has imported hun- dreds of MX-5 engines from Korea to sell to Lower Mainland eyclists. The 33 c.c. two-cycle engine weighs just 6.7 kg (4.7 Ibs.) and will fit on, according to the manu- facturer, virtually any style of bicycle. Top speed for the MX-5 is 50 kmh (31 m.p.h.). “We've sold them to both rac- ing and mountain-bike owners with no problems,” reports Bosac Trading’s Min Park. With the flip of a handle-bar mounted-switch, the engine can be disengaged from the bike wheel, allowing for greater flexibility in switching from gas to people power. “In many parts of the world, these kinds of engines offer a real alternative fo commuters fed up with fighting traffic and fumes to and from work,” Park says of the efficient little engine. “It’s a pret- ty new concept in North America though.” So new, in fact, that Park and her associates found that the little- engine-that-could might require a licence from the Motor Vehicles Branch to operate. “We still can't get a straight answer from the Ministry,” Park says of Bosae’s attempts to deter- mine the definition of a motor- assisted bicycle. “It's frustrating when the government says they want to reduce emissions and then drag their feet on good alternative ideas.” The best advice a government agency has given the importer is to “continue selling them till someone tells you to stop.” Regardless of the bureaucratic red tape, the company believes the engine is just the thing for cycling into the 21st century.
