Saa launches the new 900 In uni que settings Q.E. Theatre hosts Vancouver debut LAST FALL about 300 peo- ple responded to an invita- tion that said: “... cordially invite you and your guest to a night of artistic vision... the premiere of Ballet British Columbia’s 1993/1994 Season, featuring the work of Artistic Director John Alleyne.” Sounds like an ordinary invita- tion to 4 bailet show. Yes, but with a twist — this classic-looking invitation card was sent by Saab. not the ballet group. In fact, it was really an invita- tion to the official introduction of the most important product in Saab's history: the Saab 900. The contemporary ballet and the all-new 1994 Saab 900 seem to have nothing in common until you realize that both are targeted at the same audience: a group of people who enjoy classy, fine artwork that’s unique, different, and innova- tive. : Realizing that the new Saab 900 —— a product with a hint of both the future and the past — caters to peo- ple who appreciate automobiles from a different angle, Saab decid- ed that the car should be launched in an environment that embraces culture, art and history... So the debut of the 900 occurred in Toronto on Nov. 2, 1993, in the Art Gallery of Ontario. Three Saab 900s were displayed inside the Gallery, surrounded by “the finest collection of paintings and artwork around. - - “The crowd went crazy,” said Chris Douglas, spokesman for _General-Motors of Canada (Saab is 50%. owned by GM). “The event went extremely well.” In order to emphasize the artistic styling of the Saab 900, a number _of photos, showing the selected parts of the car, were displayed along the walls. In effect, the Saab 900 became _the piece of art. Then GM took the Saab 900 to Montreal and launched it at the Rio Pell Gallery. Rio Pelt is a contemporary abstract artist who is well-known for unique and nvind- stimulating work. The 900 was unveiled at the same time Pell took the wraps off his newest collection of paintings. Then finally, on Nov. 26, the debut took place at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, in conjunction with the start of the Ballet British Columbia's new sea- son, as mentioned earlier. David Ghao ‘OVERDRIVE Before the first ballet dancer came leaping onto the stage. the curtain was raised to reveal the shiny Saab 900. People actually smiled and chuckled at the unex- pected stage opening. Not surprisingly. this was the first time a car was displayed on the stage of the Queen Elizabeth © Theatre. During the intermission, two Saab 900s were displayed in the lounge area, giving the guests the chance to touch and sit inside the five-door hatchback models. Some of the invited guests were also treated to the champagne cock- tail celebration during the first intermission. At the end of the bal- let event, the same group of people were invited to meet the cast . In all three cities, the invitations were sent strategically to the media, current owners of Saub automo- biles, and to potential buyers of the new Saab models (as determined by the Saturn Saab-Isuzu dealers). According to Chris Douglas, every event was successful and ‘helped GM launch the unique 900 model in a very special way. The marketing strategy seems to be working. The consumers are responding well to the new Saab ‘and it is apparently “sold out” for the nexi couple of months. The plant in Europe is having a difficuls time keeping up with the demand. The superb powertrain, agile handling, smooth ride and excellent intcrior packaging make ihe new 900 one of the most exciting cars of the 1994 lineup. And with the 900, GM and Saab have shown to the world thit uniqueness and great character can co-exist in the same car. Argyle graduate one of 12 scholarship winners for ’93 NORTH VANCOUVER student .
