Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW OCAL POP hit man Paul Janz is back with a full release of new material to follow up the 1990 release of Renegade Romantic. Janz recently spoke with Music Now about Trust, his latest. Music Now: This one strikes me as having harder edges. Was that a conscious decision? Janz: “‘| really think that the harder edge you are perceiving has to do with less processing in the production. | think the songs in terms of melody and structure are along the same lines. | just think that the way it was produced -- the vocals, especially ~ | wanted to make sure there wasn't that processing. ! lot of processing, compression, will soften things up. | would say this one is just starker."’ Music Now: How did you connect with the Total Experi- ence Gospel from Seattle for the project? Janz “4 phoned the union here and they said phone the focal in Seattle. ! phoned the local in Seat- tle and they very grudgingly gave me the name of this choir, because these guys aren’t members of the union. “They came in and they drove up in this huge dilapidated bus . right up into our driveway. “It was so cool out here in the woods of B.C. to have a whole truckload of black people just singing like crazy: it was a neat time. We catered stuff and after they finished singing we hung out ’ {at his studio in Mission)."’ Employment ond Emotot et Music Now: How did you become involved in working with World Vision? Janz: “They have a yearly thing called the 30-hour famine. Kids all across the country will go on a 30-hour fast and raise money. This year there were over 100,000 kids across Canada doing this. Each year to raise interest at the Much Music level, they have a one-hour special with someone who is well known in Canada. That was my input last year. “Yd went down to Brazil to look at the work they were doing.”’ Music Now: What does it mean to you to be involved in something like this? janz: “I’m able to do music in Canada, make a decent living at it and I'm very, very grateful for that. The music industry has been very ood to ine and this is a way of giving something back to people in general. | feel that it is a moral imperative that all of us give of what we've been given.’ Music Now: ft weuld imagine that the metaphor for the song Amazon Rain came from that period? janz: “A lot of people listen to Amazon Rain and think it’s a song about the rain forest. itis a meta. — phorical thing. | remember seeing in Brazil four- or five-year-old kids completely abandoned, sleeping in gutters night after night, under bridges, meeting a girl who was 13 and she was pregnant and | thought, ‘Wow that’s early,’ and then i found out that it was her third pregnancy. “She had aborted the other two and her boyfriend had been killed by a death squad. These aren’t strange cases, they happen ail the time. For me coming back from there, | just remember wanting to put some of the tragedy and trauma these people were living into the music, and | couldn’t because t think | was trying to make it too profound. | threw it out and wrote from my gut feelings and this stuff filters through. “When we were out there, Terry David Mulligan and myself See Sang gospel page 34 Don’t leave it te the last minute! if you plan on taking training while you're on UI, you must see an Employment Officer to see if you are eligible.
