Teen acing competition MICHELLE NEVEKLOVSKA may not be eyeing the likes of ‘“‘veteran” tennis stars Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles just yet, but the West Vancouver tennis ace is wel! on # her way to establishing herself as one of the top young players in the country. The 13-year-old Grade 8 stu- dent will be representing the Pacific Northwest Tennis Associa- tion (PNWTA) at the USTA girls’ under-14 national indoor cham- pionships, beginning on Nov. 25 in St. Louis, Mo. B.C., Alaska, Washington make up PNWTA. Neveklovska took up tennis just five years ago. She currently plays at the Capilano Athletic Club. Under the watchful eye of fa- ther/coach Petr, she has steadily advanced her skills to the point that she is now ranked in the pro- vince’s top 10 standings for worien, “Her real strengths are her deadly forehand and the fact that she is just a tremendous athlete,”’ commented her proud father. The right-hander is currently ranked No. ! in the province under-16 category, playing one division up in age categories for better compeiition. The Sentinel student has played in nine Canadian national cham- pionships, but the trip to Missouri Oregon and the By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter will be her first U.S. nationals. Earlier this year Neveklovska was chosen for Tennis Canada’s youth development program, a countrywide program sponsored by the national body to advance fe the skills and development of the country’s most promising juniors. Two weeks ago she won an in- door tournament at her home club in the under-16 division. She cur- rently practises 16 hours through the week and competes every weekend on the B.C. junior in- door circuit. At fast weekend's third series of the circuit, hosted by The River Club in Richmond, Neveklovska swept Vancouver’s Joana Buc- zkowska 6-2, 6-1 to win the girls’ under-18 singles final, In the giris’ under-i8 doubles final, Neveklovska and Buc- zkowska played on the same side of the net, but lost 6-3, 7-5 to West Vancouver’s Zahra Ahamed and White Rock’s Sasha Mattoo. Sydor wins ‘President’s Trophy’ NORTH VANCOUVER cyclist Alison Sydor has been named one of Canada’s outstanding cyclists by the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA). Sydor, 26, was awarded the President's Trophy for special achievement. Past winners of the honor include Tour de France star Steve Bauer of Ontario. “Alison is one of the most ver- satile racers in the world,’’ said Pat Healy, national team coor- dinator of the CCA. This past season Sydor won numerous international road and mountain-bike races in North America and Europe, including a silver medal at the World Moun- tain Bike Championships in Bro- mont, Quebec in September. Annie Gariepy, 17, of Bromont, Quebec won the Russ Coupland Trophy as the outstanding junior cyclist. ALISON SYDOR CARSON GRAHAM secondary school will be the site of the Master’s Invitation tae kwon do championship this Saturday. Form and elimination matches will begin at 9:30 a.m. in this World Tac Kwon Do Federation sanctioned event, featuring some of the most skilled practitioners of the discipline in the province. Tae kwon do, a Korean mar- tial art with roots more than 2,000 years old, emphasizes kicks more than blows with the hand. ‘‘Tae’’ translates as ‘‘jumping and kicking,’’ ‘kwon’? means ‘“‘striking and blocking with the hand,’’ and **do"’ is “‘the way.”" Like other martial arts, tae kwon do emphasizes ethics, phi- losophy and tradition.
