April 25: North Vancouver Girls
Softball for ages nine to 12 will
hold a “Fun Day" for aa ex-
pected 350 junior girls at Lynn
Valley Park, located at Lynn
Valley Road and Frederick, from
9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Softball
Association member Bill Watson
will be on hand to give some
practical instruction on throwing
and catching. The event is the of-
ficial start of the softball season.

pressure off them so they can go
right on with their studies."’

When asked about the training
program, he is philosophical.

Gerela believes athletes should
have fun, but the fun should come
in the form of achievement, not
horseplay.

Athletes are expected to
weight-train in preparation for
August startup.

At that time, they will begin to
work on power and skills devel-
opment, too. The players are ex-
pected to work out four days a
weck for two to three hours a
day.

With regard to keeping players
in Canada he said local sponsor-
ship is the key. Gerela feels that a
fot of high-calibre players are
forced to gc to the United States
for scholarships when they could
be staying here.

He adds that he would like to
play a part in changing this.

On April 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the
Capilano College Sportsplex,
Gerela and staff will be showing
potential recruits around Capilano
College’s facilities and explaining
support systems.

There will also be sign-ups for
summer soccer in preparation for
tryouts to be held in August.

Yacht club
celebrates
anniversary

BURRARD YACHT Club will
celebrate its 60th anniversary in
conjunction with its annual
sailpast on Saturday, May 9.

The event will consist of the
sailpast {club boats saluting the
commodore to open the 1992
season) in the late’ morning,
followed by official ceremonies
and hors d’ouevres at the
clubhouse in the early afternoon.

April 26: Third Annual Manulife
Ride for Heart starts at UBC's
east mall at 8 a.m. The 50-
kilometre ride is expected to draw
more than 5,000 participants with
pledge proceeds going to the
Heart and Stroke Foundation of
B.C. and Yukon. Volunteers are
also required to help in race pro-
ceedings. Anyone requiring volun-
teer or registration information,

May 18: Sussex North Shore Spr-
ing Triathlon will include a swim

at Ron Andrews RecCentre’s
pool, a three-loop cycle, and a
trail and street run. The event will
feature a kids’ triathlon, a
triathlon for various age groups
and a triathlon for top triathletes.
This year’s event is a fundraiser
for the chemotherapy unit at
Lions Gate Hospital. The
triathlon sponsors include Sussex
Realty, North Shore News and the
North Shore Credit Union. For
