Heavy rotation NV band The Running go nation-wide for radio airplay with their independently-released debut ORTH VAN- _COUVER rockers The Running are running hard on the heels of the release of the band’s first cD. New bands playing out dreams of success must negotiate their way through a contemporary music business increasingly defin- ed by corporate concentration and musical-genre fragmentation. The Running lead vocalist, guitarist and writer Sacha Spindler and drummer-vocalist Dave Morello have decided to pursue radio airplay in a big way. Spindler and Morello met seven years ago while playing in jazz bands at the Capilano College inusic program. The pair hit it off and opened their own local recording studio. Three years ago the two formed The Running. Although the CD release marks the first full-length finished product for the band, the recording follows ‘‘tens of thou- sands of hours” of studio record - ing time logged by Spindler prior to his latest professional incarnation. Since February, a number of songs from the band’s self-titled, Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW independentiy-released debut have received airplay on several radio stations. Music Now recent- ly spoke with Sacha Spindler. Music Now: How important is radio airplay to a new band starting up today? Spindler: "As far as I'm concern- ed it’s the number one priority. Everything falls in after airplay. It depends on the kind of band you are. We're not a ‘go out there and drink a lot of beers’ type of band. We're a concert band. To get a following that way is a pretty hard thing to create, especially with the way the economy is right now and with the amount of bands out there who do try to create good times for everybody — radio 44 Going province by province is the trick ... lots of phone calls and lots of faxing. 99 - Sacha Spindier airplay is priority number one. Music Now: How did you get radio to listen? Spindler: ‘We did compact disc because radio stations play them. We've had a lot of airplay with two of the songs that are re- recorded for this record. Some FM stations had been playing off quarter-inch half track masters after they liked what they heard from cassettes we sent. “They carted them and played them in medium rotation and reg- ular rotation on two stations. It was real luck. “These two guys in particular, Brant Zwicker at K97 in Kamloops and Rob Robson at 299 in Red See NV band page 30 RIKAMER 2422 Marine Dr., West Vancouver 922-5751 Eat In Only. Exp.
