WV principal proposes co-op arrangement for Trek outdoor program A ‘Trek’-style program could still tbe available to Grade 10 students in West Vancouver, but the struc- ture of the alternative out- door education program could differ radically from the existing curriculum at Vancouver’s Prince of Wales school, the model for the proposed program. By A.P. McCredie Contributing Writer West Vancouver Senior Sec- ondary school principal Arnie Smith presented a progress report on the possibility of implementing a Trek program at West Van- couver District 45 school board’s Jan. 13 meeting. Trek programs are designed to challenge students physically, mentally and academically by placing them in planned out- door/environmental situations that encourage them to make decisions and work closely with others in small groups to promote interdependence and leadership. Smith expressed confidence in the worth of such programs, but had reservations about implemen- ting a carbon-copy of the Prince of Wales program. Apart from having no space at Present 10 house an Environ- ment/Outdoor Education Pro- gram at WVSS, Smith questioned the availability of qualified staff WEST VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD within the District 45 to run such a program, though he said it pro- vided an opportunity to hire new teachers. Smith was also concerned about the financial viability: of such a program; he noted that over half the proposed budget of the pro- gram would have to come from’ public fundraising. Smith offered an alternative approach that would incorporate a Trek-style program into the school through a co-op arrange- ment, like the year-old coopera- tive education program for the biological sciences at WVSS. The success of the biological science co-op has resulted in the expansion of the program to in- clude computer science next year, and Smith believes ‘that the goals of our cooperative education ven- ture and the goals presented by advocates of a Trek-type program have much in common.”” Noting that the inclusion of an outdoor education program as a co-op program would allow the possibility of receiving support through Employment and = Im- migration Canada co-op funding, Smith also pointed out that such an arrangement could be operated by a single teacher. The board granted a March 13 extension for input to the report from parents interested in a Trek program.
