Shopping with energy
efficiency in mind

Save us time and work, and it’s
hard to imaging life without them.
Indeed, appliance use accounts for
20 cents of every energy dollay
spent at home. ‘‘By buying Power
Smart appliances, you can save up
to one-third of their energy costs,
while enjoying all the convenience
they offer,’’ says Bob Favelle,
B.C. Hydro Power Smart repre-
sentative for the North Shore/
coastal area. ‘“‘That's good for
your pocketbook — and for the
environment, too.”

When you buy a new car or
truck, you check its fuel con-
sumption. Now you can do the
same when you shop for major
household appliances. When
comparing the price of two appli-
ances with similar features, con-
sider not only the purchase price,

but also the lifetime electricity .

cost.

“Look for the EnerGuide
label,’’ advises Favelle. ‘‘This tells
you how much electricity that ap-
pliance. uses per month. The lower

number will use less. energy and

cost less to operate. That .means
savings year after year.’’

To calculate the monthly elec-
tricity cost, simply multiply the

number of kilowatt-hours (kW.h) |

the appliance uses each month
(the number on the EnerGuide
label) by your cost per kKW.h of
.@lectricity (approximately five
cents). Multiply this figure by 12
(months) to get the yearly cost,

then by 20 (years) for the lifetime

‘electricity cost.

Let’ ’s take an cxample.: ‘Suppose :

you're looking at two
refrigerators. A standard model
‘has an EnerGuide rating of 110
kW.h/month, while a Power
Smart unit is rated at 85 kW.h/
month.

For the standard model, multip-
Ty 110 x §.05 x 12 x 20 = $1,320
in electricity casts over the lifetime
of the refrigerator.

For the Power Smart model,
multiply 85 x $.05 x 12 x 20 =
$1,020. Therefore, the energy-
efficient model will save $300 in
lifetime electricity costs — a
significant difference.

EnerGuide labels appear on
refrigerators, freezers, dishwash-
ers, ranges, clothes washers and
dryers.

Clubs displaying at PNE

WESTERN CANADA offers
one of the largest outdoor
flower shows at this year’s
PNE provincial Fair from
August 16 to September 2.

The show will feature over
half an acre of exotic types of
flora and brilliantly-colored
plants and flowers that will be
on display.

year’s annual show will feature
two daily garden forums for
green-fingered enthusiasts. from
