The greatest training in the world is knocking on a cold door trying to sell somebody some- thing....Being shy — and I was — and people won't believe me because today I’m somewhat out- going — it (Fuller Brush) was a great breakthrough for me."’ How have you managed to survive in the volatile clothing world for 43 years? ‘“‘We thought it was time for a change, so we opened Boys’ Co and Magnet. That's the way you have to be. Long ago, when I first started, 1 was one of very few old-time clothing stores. Today they have all these national stores coming from the east. Van- couver is a big city today. Business is tough and it changes constantly. This is my 43rd year, and sure, it helps a lot having the experience, but it means nothing unless you grow with the change — change in fashion and mer- chandising. I like to think we do that very successfully....Our stores are relaxed, the staff is very person- able....Sure, we suffered Hke crazy a few times when I first started in business. | almost had to plead every month when J went to the bank to increase my loan just to pay the bills....But if you're hon- orable and you owe someone...if you can’t pay, you should pick up the phone and tell them....We honored our commitments and still do."" How did you get involved with Big Brothers? ‘‘Thirty-five years ago. a customer approached me. He asked me to join Big Brothers and ! said, ‘I'm fighting to sur- vive.” He said ‘What if I buy a M, neighbors always you keep? ‘‘I come in at 7 a.m. My neighbors always kid me that I have to be the first to go downtown to sweep the storefronts.” Where do you live in West Van- couver? ‘Right behind the funeral parlor and West Vancouver kid me that I have to be the first to go downtown to sweep the storefronts.’ suit, would you join?’ So J said ‘You've got yourself a deal.” It was the best thing that happened to me. | was assigned as a Big Brother, and I've had several little brothers since. }’m still very ac- tive. It’s the greatest organization in the whole world. Seeing a boy who’s closed in and watching his confidence sprout...gives me great satisfaction. Grown people, if they need help, can ask for it up to a point, but youngsters can’t. That’s why | put so much time into it.”’ What's the biggest change you've seen in the clothing business? “The way of life for a man has changed today. It’s more relax- ed.”” What kind of business hours do Florist. When I pass the under- taker, and he asks me how I’m feeling, I say, ‘Just fine thank you!” Most memorable anecdote: ‘Years ago there was a movie theatre on Hastings near my store which was featuring an animal show. We had leopard shirts and we just couldn't move them, so | asked the owner of the animal show if we could put the cub lion in my store window, next to my shirts. One day, the cub lion got up and fteaned on the partition and the board started weaving back and forth. Some women were in the store and they went running out screaming, some hid in the bathroom, until the lion tamer came.” Sylvan this summer.
