Author Guy Lawrence came to
Canada from England at age 17
with his father in 1898 as part of
the great Klondike gold rush.

Their experiences over the next
two years, as they wearily dragged
two tons of supplies (often by
backpack) up ice-choked rivers,
across treacherous muskeg and
over a seemingly endless expanse
of ice and snow, constitute hard-
ships almost unimaginable today.

When Lawrence senior returned
home after roughly a year in the
Yukon, his son stayed and even-
tually embarked on a four-decade
career as a telegraph operator sta-
tioned at a variety of isolated
posts.
