The 1988 Continental adds a new dimension to Ford of Canada’s aerodynamic styling. Its sleek shape epitomizes the ‘‘form follows function’ philosophy in achieving a low .36 coefficient of Sales general manager Bob Warkentin. Also contributing to Continen- tal’s clean, efficient appearance are aerodynamic halogen headlamps, flush-mounted glass and integrated front and rear bumpers. A ver- PLAZA Lincoln-Mercury tical-style grille, mounted flush with the headlamps, retains the Continental identity, while the wraparound full-width taillamps new rear create a fresh, pearance. The Lincoln Continental has an advanced level of functional sophistication — even for this segment of the market. For exam- ple, Continental offers as standard a four-wheel disc brake system with electronic ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System). ABS uses a system of electronic sensors, computer and hydraulic components that automatically pumps the brakes to help maintain steering ability and vehicle stability under the hardest of braking. An added benefit is that stops on wet or slippery roads are generally significantly shorter than with conventional brakes. Continental’s four-wheel in- dependent suspension system is all-new and utilizes the latest tech- nology. It is a computer-controlled dual-damping air suspension system with air springs and dual damping shock absorbers at each wheel that provides a smooth, level tide under all types of road condi- tions. The amount of air in each spring is continuously monitored and ad- justed by a microcomputer to keep ap- we ncoin Continental ith conte: The 1988 THE VOICE OF NORTH AND WEST VANCOUVER SUNDAY + WEDNESDAY - FRIDAY hoto submitted Lincoln Town Car Photo submitted THE ALL-NEW technologically advanced 1988 Continental is the first front-wheel-drive Lincoln. At the same time, a number of sensors alert the microcomputer as to vehicle speed and road conditions, and it automatically adjusts the damping of each strut to instantly provide excellent ride, handling and stability for the current condi- tions. Vehicle dynamics are optimized by reducing undesirable charac- teristics such as body roll during handling manoeuvres, and body pitch during acceleration and brak- ing. The suspension is complemented by a new speed-sensitive variabie- assist rack-and-pinion power steer- ing system that varies the steering effort to provide a firmer, more secure feel at higher speeds and reduced steering effort while driv- ing at slower speeds, for example in parking manoeuvres. The '88 Continental also features a new 3.8-litre V-6 engine, built at Ford’s Essex Engine Plant, Windsor, Ontario, that incor- Porates sophisticated design features to provide excellent responsiveness and smooth per- formance. It utilizes multi-port electronic fuel injection to provide quick response and exceptional driveability, and a balance shaft to assure operational smoothness. In addition, the engine is teamed with a smooth, efficient four-speed automatic overdrive transaxle. The new Continental is offered in two trim levels —— Standard and Signature series — with the dif- ferences reflected primarily in the seat sew styles and fabrics, as well as the level of convenience features standard in the car’s all-new inte- rior.
