By NANCY WEATHERLEY AFTER EM- BARRASSING . myself in public at an over- whelming Jazzercise class last week, I decided if I couldn't become fit within the privacy of my own four walls, then fitness was not for me. These are a couple of options available to the hermit who hopes eventually to emerge from the cocoon a beautiful, muscular, athletic butterfly. Of course it can be done. The problem as>-aiways for those of us who are trying to begin a regular exercise program, is MOTIVATION. The big bonus with an in- home fitness plan is that it brings the motivation to you - you don’t have to go out to a class, or a club, or a team to get your workout. For many women this is important. Embarrassment about age, weight,,or ability often stops us from. joining fitness groups. Even ‘finding a regular tithe for organized excercise can be a problem, especially for working women and mothers. A stay-at-home, do-when- you-will excercise program has obvious advantages. Of course there are equally obvious disadvantages such as the lack of comraderie one often finds in fitness groups, and the stimulus, without a pre-arranged, pre- paid time is less. It is a question of personal preference and, like so many things, trial and error is often the surest method of finding what suits you best. Two innovative fitness programs I have come across are The Joy of Fitness (a record) and Bogie’s Book on Fitness (yes, a book). The similarities between the two are first seen in the bright red which dominates both covers - whether the purpose is to grab your attention or draw out an aggressive desire to become fit, I'm not sure - and the incorporation of the word ‘fitness’ in the title. Both aim at overall fitness and both are specifically designed> to accommodate beginner to advanced fitness levels. Joy of Fitness is the simple, but inspired idea of a Victoria housewife, . Beryl Young, who thought how convenient a record with a full workout would be for busy young parents like herself and her husband. She incorporated her own company and hired a fitness instructor, Shirley Main, to design a program. Original music was supplied by Bill Sample. Why Joy of Fitness? Young says “If people enjoy ex- cercising they will keep at it and fitness becomes a habit. They'soon feel the benefits - increased energy, a _ trim body and a more positive outlook on life. That's where the joy comes in.” Listening to the record is a pleasant surprise. I expected an intolerably enthusiastic, raucous voice belting out directions to the = ac- companiment of loud, jangling piano chords. Instead I heard Music f Tudor House CABINETS LTD.
