Council for the Fami- th-long, 10-hour course — include ly. Phil Sunderland comes to the volunteer position having served: on the 40-member council board as the Anglican church delegate. Sunderland says the B.C. Coun- cil for the Family, which is funded by the Ministry of Social Services and Housing, donations, grants and membership fees, has been very busy during the past year developing a marriage preparation program for.which it received pro- vincial funding especially ear- marked for that purpose. ‘*There seemed to be.a need for it outside _the churches,” he said, noting that churches have always been the traditional providers of marriage preparation courses. Sunderland is now hoping that the. resource manual. being assembled by the council will be used for. marriage courses: which could. be offered through com- munity colleges and organizations such as North Shore Family Ser- vices. * According to .the Anglican church canons, couples wishing to marry in the Anglican church must © undergo some form of marriage . - preparation prior to the ceremony. Sunderland and his wife, Nancy, have been: involved in the North Shore program, currently ‘Operating .out.. of St. Martin’s Church, for the past eight years. “We had seen friends’ marriages fait, and felt that prevention was more valuable ‘than.a cure,’’ he -said,.,explaining what had motivated him and his wife to tend .@ hand to the program. - Although. Sunderland - says that ‘very little statistical research has been done showing what benefits ‘ ‘accrue: from taking. a marriage “preparation course, he says what is known is that couples who take the . course are more likely to seek help later if the need does arise. This willingness to. seek counselling helps the couple resolve small pro- blems :before they turn’ into big -: ones, Sunderland says. AN EIGHT-WEEK course design- ed to increase listening and helping skills is being offered at Hiilside Baptist Church. Starting Tuesday, Jan. 31, and running to March 21, the course is titled The Skilled Helper and con- sists of an introduction to basic counselling skills for the Christian helper. . - Elaine Wheeler of Hillside Bap- tists says that participants will “learn to listen and respond to the needs of others whiie coming to a deeper. understanding of themselves.** : Instructors of the course, which will run from 7 to 10 p.m. on the designated evenings, will be. drawn from the counselling group operating out of Burnaby Chris- tian ‘Fellowship. The fee for the series is $100 per person, or $165 for a couple. For information: call 985-1122, or the Burnaby counselling group at 430-1303. PHIL SUNDERLAND oo -ap- ‘pointed president of B.C.
