Kelsey runs a flybail course in five seconds flat. She hurdles four jumps, presses a flyball box pedal, catches a ball which Mies out, and then races back over the jumps to the start line where the next dog eagerly awaits its turn, “Speed is great, but it isn't everything we look for in a flyball dog,” says Flyers captain Janet Atkinson. Her English Cocker Spaniel, Kylie, along with Panda, a Labrador owned by Stephany Brown, adds steadiness in an ex- citing but sometimes unpredictable sport. At the club’s first tournament Carole Nicol’s Miniature Poodle, Clousseau, and Caro! Lea’s mixed breed, Bandit, helped the team turn in a respectable performance. The Flyers are the newest B.C. club to enjoy this growing inter- national sport. A flyball team consists of four dogs racing in ‘felay style against another team and against the clock. The dogs can be of any size or breed, or of mixed heritage, as long as they are fit and eager to retrieve a ball. The club meets weekly at the North Van Sea Cadet Hall or at the Northwest Boarding Kennels arena, and is practising now for the Pacific Canine Showcase competition in June at the PNE Forum. “Anyone and their dog’’ inter- ested in the sport may call 922- 9110 or 986-3738 for more infor- mation.
