Pleasant | surprises from Quay wine store John Moore WINE SPOTS PRIVATE WINE shops offer much more than just flexibility of shop- ping hours. ; Like the North Shore Wine Cellars at Lonsdale Quay, most are staffed by knowledgeable people who can steer you in the direction of bargains you won’t find on the LDB shelves. These two pleasant surprises were picked up at Lonsdale Quay on a Sunday en route to dinner. LAS CONDES SAUVIGNON BLANC 1992 $9.99 (Chile) Best sauvignon blanc I’ve tasted ina long while. Nothing like the thin, sharp wines often made from this grape; this one really has size. Abundant complex fruit and lots of body, well balanced. Raised eyebrows all around the table on the first sip. Excellent value. CHATEAU CAPION 1991 COTEAUX DE LANGUEDOC $13.99 (France) The Languedoc used to be one of the most notorious tributaries of the vast river of indifferent tonsil- ripper flowing from the south of France. Things are changing; new vi- sionary cooperatives and updated methods are praducing wines like this: cich, silky reds that are distinctly Mediterranean (this one has a slight Spanish accent, proba- bly fron a dash of grenache). ut don’t worry about the pedi- gree. Just enjoy. recC See ijacomare ce 1:30-4:45pm Monster Splash 1:30-5:00pm New Friendly Fun House especially for young children.
