IF YOU have prepared your
car properly, it is ready to
face the rigors of a long
holiday drive. Or you may
choose to fly or ride the
rails, and rent a car when
you reach your destination.
In cither case, here are a
few ideas to make your
driving experience
smoother:

When you drive:
@ Drive carefully. Accidents can
happen anywhere at any time. Re-
sponsibility cannot be left at
home, and unfamiliar roads pose
more dangers to you and your
family than roads you know well.
Practise defensive driving.
@ Make sure to wear your seat
belt and ensure all passengers are
appropriately buckled up.
@ Fight road fatigue by stopping
frequently to stretch, keeping your
eyes moving or switching drivers.
© Once familiar with local traffic
regulations, obey. them. Legal
hassles, especially in a foreign
country, can easily ruin a vaca-
tion. CAA members are protected
with a U.S. bail bond and arrest
bond for auto-related offenses
only.
@ Remember that riding in a
towed trailer is prohibited in most

@ Play it safe with big trucks on
the highway. Keep a safe distance
behind them, signal when you
plan to pass and wait until there is
more than enough room to pass.
Trucks can sometimes be longer
than they appear,
@ If a service-station attendant
tells you there is something wrong
with your car (blue exhaust fumes,
for example), be wary. CAA clubs
have uncovered several scams by
unscrupulous garage owners.
Look for a CAA- or AAA-ap-
proved “AARS"’ facility to verify
any suspected problems.

If your car breaks down:
@ CAA members are well covered
for roadside assistance in the
United States and Canada by call-
ing AAA or CAA. If you are not
a member, choose a CAA/AAA
contractor.
~ Renting a car:
@ If you are a CAA member ren-
ting a vehicle from Hertz, show
your CAA membership card for a
special discount rate.
@ Car rentals paid for with a
CAA MasterCard come equipped
with automatic car rental in-
surance.
@ A vacation is better planned
and costs easier to control by ar-
ranging your car rental from
Canada.
